Review: The Suspect by Robert Rinder

The Suspect is set in London, within the worlds of commercial television and the legal system, and opens with the death of Jessica Holby, a popular TV presenter, on live television during a cooking segment.
The story is centred around Jessica’s death and the ensuing investigation. It is believed Jessica was poisoned by celebrity chef Sebastian Brooks, who maintains he is not responsible for Jessica’s death, despite all the evidence pointing only to him. The cause of death is similar to the death in Rinder’s previous book The Trial, although the way in which it was carried out is very different. That is not the only similarity as both deaths have a large number of witnesses watching as it happens.
Barrister Adam Green returns in The Suspect as part of Sebastian’s defense team. Adam suspects there’s more to this case, delving deeper into the investigation and uncovering hidden truths.
Having really enjoyed reading The Trial (the first in the Adam Green series), I was hoping for some of the same. I was not disappointed. This is another thrilling read by Robert Rinder and can’t help but become part of ‘team Adam’.
Robert Rinder’s legal background is just as evident throughout this book and adds a touch of realism, especially the portrayal of the courtroom scenes. However, it is not too complicated or complex that the reader will get lost amongst the legal jargon. The same can also be said about Rinder’s experience of the TV world; take a look at the popular reality courtroom series Judge Rinder and you will see how his charm and charisma oozes through the screen.
The main protagonist Adam Green is relatable in his challenge to navigate his chosen career path and the complications that his personal life presents. And I think we can all understand that.
I’m really looking forward to catching up with Adam Green in The Prospect and see what he does with his next case.
