Review: The Trial by Robert Rinder

The Trial is set in the Old Bailey, London’s central criminal court, and opens with the shocking death of Grant Cliveden, a celebrated police officer, who collapses and dies from poisoning in the courtroom.

The story is centred around Adam Green, a young barrister, who is currently trying to gain his pupillage into the Stag Court chambers in London under the guidance of his pupil master Jonathon Taylor-Cameron. Rinder portrays Jonathan as a reluctant teacher who seems to be more interested in women and how he looks on camera. He also seems to have washed his hands of the poisoning case and not interested in giving Adam any encouragement as he tries to get to the bottom of what really happened to Grant Cliveden, and who actually is the person or persons responsible for his murder.

This leaves Adam no choice but to manage one of the biggest cases of his life as best he can. However, the lack of Jonathan’s involvement does give Adam the perfect opportunity to do some sleuthing of his own, and that is where we see Adam at his best and, sometimes, at his worst. But there is no doubt his potential to become a great barrister is evident.

Like many, I know Robert Rinder from TV (Judge Rinder, Strictly Come Dancing), although I wasn’t aware that he had ventured in the world of writing. I came across Robert Rinder’s first novel The Trial as part of an online carers book club that I was hoping to be part of. Unfortunately due to my continuing health issues, I never got round to joining but did get emailed the books that had been chosen and The Trial was one of those books. I am so glad I got the chance to read The Trial, as I did really enjoy immersing myself in the pages of this legal thriller and discovering a new author.

The Trial kept me interested from the first page to the last page; those are my kind of reads. Robert Rinder’s background as a barrister shines through and creates a very realistic and believable setting in both the court scenes at The Old Bailey and within Stag Court Chambers.

Star Rating for The Trial

Rating: 5 out of 5.

If you are looking to discover a new book series, I highly recommend the Adam Green series by Robert Rinder; ideal for fans of who dunnits and courtroom dramas.
