General: My Five ‘Grandma’ Hobbies
It turns out that I ventured into the ‘grandma’ era about twenty years too soon and now I am a grandma (very new one too!) I continue to enjoy all my grandma hobbies and have just added a new one to my list.
When did you join the ‘grandma’ era? If you are reading this, you at must at least enjoy reading books. Maybe it’s something you learnt from your own grandma; my granddaughter already has a bookcase full of books and she’s a long way from learning to read. But as her mum (my daughter) loves to read, and I love to read, and I’m happy to buy books as presents, I’m sure she’ll follow in our footsteps.
These are my five ‘grandma’ hobbies:
- Gardening

I used to be out in the garden a lot more than I am now and would spend afternoons planting colourful flowers in decorative plant pots. Unfortunately, due to terrible hayfever I don’t do that now, but I have this year decided to get some colour back in my garden, starting with a hanging basket. I know it’s not proper gardening but I’ll need to look after it and ensure it gets plenty of water in the warmer weather. My plan is also to do a rockery area and get some really colourful heathers and some garden decorations, and lights hanging about too.
2. Reading

Reading has been a big part of my life since I was a teenager; I love books, I love reading, I love talking about books, I love writing about books! I don’t think this is a hobby that will not be present in my life and I have passed this hobby down to my children (who are now adults) and they continue to enjoy reading too.
3. Painting

I think I must have done some painting at school and also when my children were younger but I can’t remember sitting painting as an adult; painting a room maybe. I ventured into painting by accident really as part of a carers activity and I loved it. The instructor guided you through each stage of the painting and you followed along and no one ended up with a painting that didn’t resemble the original image. So when I saw a similar event to paint the above image, I signed up straight away. I was a little apprehensive as I didn’t know if I could end up with a decent painting but I am really happy with this. I’ve done a couple of acrylic paintings but would love to try my hand at watercolours next and see how I get on. (I’ve also painted a couple of Christmas cards too!).
4. Drinking Tea

I haven’t always been a tea drinker; coffee was my thing until I became pregnant and switched to tea. I still drink coffee occasionally but have to watch how many I have due to my dialysis restrictions, so my go to is tea. I can also claim to have gone to a Tea Festival where I discovered Clipper tea and that is what I now drink at home. If ordering tea out and about it’s generally PG tips or Breakfast Tea. Always with two sugars and a splash of milk and don’t forget to give it a good stir! I even drink tea in the middle of summer.
5. Jigsaw Puzzles

This is a very new hobby for me, and I have only done two jigsaw puzzles at the moment (including the one above). My son bought me a 1000 piece jigsaw for Christmas but it was too difficult for me, so for Mother’s Day he got me a 500 piece one instead and that one was not so tricky. I ended up ordering five more puzzles and a puzzle board to keep my mind active.
I would definitely say I am in my ‘grandma’ era with these hobbies, are you going to join in the fun too?
