There are many places that avid readers might consider as the ideal place to read, including a quiet park, a less than busy spot in nature, a cozy cafe, an armchair beside a window, and the peaceful part of a library. These places, with their very different vibes, enhance the reading experience, from the peacefulness of nature to the social buzz of a busy cafe.
However, none of these places could be your perfect place to read. Maybe you read at the bus stop, or on your commute to work, or spend your coffee and lunch breaks getting through a couple more chapters. Or are you someone that only reads just before bed and only for a set period of time?
Let’s take a look at The Virtual Bookcase’s perfect places to read:
- Comfy armchair (preferably by a window)

A designated reading nook, especially one with a view, offers a personal and relaxing space to immerse oneself in a book. It’s a personal retreat for book lovers designed to enhance relaxation and provide a cozy atmosphere along with a visual connection to the outside world.
2. In Bed

Reading in bed can be relaxing and a beneficial activity that potentially improves sleep quality. However, it is important to ensure you maintain a comfortable position and have adequate lighting. Your back and eyes will thank you for it. The best way to do this is to have plenty of cushions or pillows that you can readjust as needed or invest in a decent cuddle cushion. As for lighting, a table lamp or bright bulb will help you avoid eye strain.
3. The Garden

Now Spring is slowly arriving and the weather is getting better, many people’s attention turns to the garden. For me, this is one of my favourite outdoor places to read. Not only are you getting some much needed fresh air, you are also getting a daily dose of Vitamin D. It is also a relatively cheap alternative to reading in other outdoor places and for those people who have mobility issues or lack of transport, you don’t have to go very far; even apartment dwellers often have an outdoor area.
4. On the train

Reading can be a good way to pass the time whilst travelling on a train, and the journey doesn’t need to be a long one. Most people get to the station way ahead of time and spend the time before the train arrives at the platform waiting. Having a book at hand can be the perfect way to pass the time away; even better accompanied by a hot cup of coffee (or a cold refreshing drink if the weather is warmer).
5. The Beach

Last but not least The Beach. Hands up who has read a book or two whilst on a beach holiday. I don’t think I’ve ever been on holiday without having a book or three packed in my suitcase. It’s a similar experience to reading in The Garden but with the added sound effects of the waves crashing against the shore, and the smell of the salty sea water.
Do you prefer to go outdoors – in the garden, a library, a local cafe? Or do you prefer to stay indoors, like me. My perfect place to read a book is in my bedroom under the duvet, sometimes with the radio on, sometimes not. One of the best times to read is when I wake up early and the rest of the house is sleeping. No distractions, no interruptions, just peace and quiet.
